ABOUT THE EVENT
In this celebration of the spiritually transcendent songs of composer Josef Bohuslav Foerster (1859–1951), Bree Nichols is joined by mezzosoprano Ester Pavlů, soprano Eliška Gattringerová, baritone Martin Vodrážka, and pianist Stanislav Gallin for the first recital in her Fulbright recital series. Its title references the composer's autobiography, Poutník (The Pilgrim), with the recital program tracing Foerster's life's journey through works from his time in Hamburg, in Vienna, and finally home in Prague. It concludes with the rarely-heard song cycle, Praze (To Prague), a love letter in song to the city that defined the composer's life and work.
Under the scope of Bree's Fulbright work, selected song cycles from this recital will be republished in new editions with English translations and phonetic transcriptions for singers, facilitating their future programming by musicians and educators around the world.
