ABOUT THE EVENT
The music of Josef Mysliveček thrilled Italian audiences of the time, who knew the Prague-born composer as “Il Boemo;” he is known to have inspired Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and in recent years has enjoyed a renaissance among opera lovers around the world. Mysliveček composed his stage works exclusively in the quintessential Baroque genre of opera seria, based on historical, exotic, or mythological themes and offering singers space for virtuosic display. This work, titled Il gran Tamerlano (Tamerlán in Czech), premiered in Milan in 1771 for the annual carnival. This story of the power of desire and the ability to renounce it, set in the medieval Ottoman Empire, became the most frequently performed opera of its time. With Il gran Tamerlano, Josef Mysliveček appears on the stage of the Pilsen theater for the very first time. Read more...
